Sedation can help a variety of patients...

Sedation is most commonly used during extensive procedures, for patients with dental phobia or for patients who find it difficult to sit still. There are different types of sedation, including nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), IV sedation and oral sedatives.

Patients with dental phobias, low pain tolerance, major dental treatment, physical handicaps or strong gag reflexes may require sedation. Procedures such as fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, extractions, cosmetic procedures and periodontal treatments often require sedation.

Dr. James is licensed to provide oral, IM and IV Sedation. Your dental experience can be much more comfortable with sleep dentistry. You physiologically sleep as you would at night time. There is a dramatic reduction in what is considered painful stimulus. Time will seem shorter. Many patients who are not dental phobic choose sedation due to the efficiency of having multiple treatments in one session.

Sedation requires an empty stomach. Do not eat any solid food within six hours of the appointment. You can have water up to two hours prior. You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and care for you that day. The following day you can resume normal activity and decision making. Certain medical conditions require customizing medication and food intake. Dr. James will discuss this with you before your treatment.

Sedation is endorsed by the American Dental Association and is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during their dental visit. Before using a sedative or anesthetic, it is important to tell your dentist about any medications or medical treatments you are receiving. Before administering any sedative or anesthetic, your dentist will talk to you about the process of sedation and pre- and post-sedation instructions.
